Landlocked Atlantic salmon are a freshwater-resident form of the famous sea-run Atlantic salmon. They complete their entire life cycle in freshwater lakes and rivers, never going to sea. Found in Newfoundland and Labrador, they provide a more accessible (though still challenging) Atlantic salmon experience.
Nearly identical to sea-run Atlantic salmon but typically smaller and more deeply coloured. Sleek, silver body. Small black X-shaped spots above the lateral line. Forked tail. Large, powerful. Spawning adults develop a bronze/kype jaw but are less dramatically coloured than sea-run fish.
Landlocked Atlantic salmon require cold, clean, deep lakes with tributary rivers for spawning. They're found in select Newfoundland and Labrador waters. They spend most of their time in deep lake water, moving into rivers and streams to spawn in fall.

Matching your bait to the conditions is one of the biggest factors in catching Landlocked Atlantic Salmon. Here's what works when:
| Weather / Condition | Best Bait & Lures | Technique |
|---|---|---|
| 🌊 River (during run) | Small wet flies (Silver Doctor, Cosseboom), small streamers | Landlocked salmon run up rivers in spring/fall. Swing small wet flies through pools and runs. |
| 🚤 Lake (trolling) | Small spoons (Mooselook Wobbler, Flashking), smelt-imitating streamers | Troll along drop-offs and over deep water where smelt schools are present. Downriggers help in summer. |
| 🌤️ Low / Clear water | Small, sparse flies on fine tippet (stealth) | Landlocked salmon are wary in clear water — small flies and long leaders. |
| 🌧️ High water | Larger, brighter streamers and wet flies | High water brings fresh fish into rivers — fish larger, more visible patterns. |
| 🍂 Fall (spawning colors) | Orange/red streamers, egg patterns | Fall-run salmon are aggressive — fish brightly colored streamers through pools. |
Spring (May–June): ice-out, fish move shallow and into rivers. Summer (July–August): deep lake water — trolling is most effective. Fall (September–October): spawning runs up rivers — prime fly fishing. Check regulations carefully — many waters are fly-only and catch-and-release.
