Bluegill and pumpkinseed sunfish are Canada's classic panfish — small, colourful, aggressive, and abundant. They're the fish most Canadians catch first, and they're perfect for kids, beginners, and relaxed shore fishing. Excellent eating when you get a mess of them.
Bluegill: deep, round body. Dark olive back with coppery-blue sides. Distinctive dark blue/black 'ear flap' (opercular flap). Black spot at the base of the soft dorsal fin. Pumpkinseed: similar shape but more colourful — orange/red spots, turquoise stripes on the face, and a red/orange edge on the ear flap.
Bluegill and pumpkinseed prefer warm, shallow water (18–24°C) in weedy lakes, ponds, and slow river backwaters. They're cover-oriented, hiding in lily pads, bulrushes, and near docks. They spawn in shallow colonies in late spring, creating visible 'beds' (circular depressions).

Matching your bait to the conditions is one of the biggest factors in catching Bluegill & Pumpkinseed. Here's what works when:
| Weather / Condition | Best Bait & Lures | Technique |
|---|---|---|
| 🌸 Spring spawn (beds) | Waxworms, maggots, small worm pieces on a small hook under a bobber | Cast to visible beds (light-colored circles in 2–6 ft). Sunfish aggressively defend their beds. |
| ☀️ Sunny / Weedy | Small jigs (1/32 oz) with twister tails, small tube jigs | Cast to weed pockets and lily pad edges. Small baits fished slowly catch the most fish. |
| 🪱 Live bait (universal) | Nightcrawler pieces, waxworms, maggots, crickets under a bobber | The classic setup — a small hook with bait suspended under a bobber near weed cover. |
| 🪰 Fly fishing | Small poppers, rubber spiders, small nymphs | Sunfish love dry flies and poppers. A 3-wt or 4-wt fly rod is perfect panfish fun. |
| 🧊 Ice fishing | Tungsten jigs with maggots/waxworms, small teardrop jigs | Sunfish school over weed flats in winter. Fish 5–15 ft with small jigs tipped with bait. |
Spring (May–June): spawning season — fish are shallow, aggressive, and easy. Summer (July–August): near weed cover in 5–15 ft. Fall (September): feeding heavily in shallower water. Ice (January–March): active over weed flats.
