How to identify Kokanee (Landlocked Sockeye)

Silvery body, blue-green back. No spots (like their sea-run sockeye cousins). Small, fine scales. Forked tail. Spawning adults turn bright red with a green head — a dramatic transformation identical to sea-run sockeye. Slender and torpedo-shaped.

Habitat & preferred water

Kokanee live their entire lives in freshwater lakes — they never go to sea. They prefer deep, cold, oligotrophic (nutrient-poor, clear) lakes with cold water (7–14°C). They're plankton-feeders, schooling in open water at the thermocline. They spawn in lake tributaries or along lake shores in fall.
