American shad are a large herring that runs up Maritime rivers in spring to spawn. They're the 'poor man's salmon' — hard-fighting, acrobatic, and abundant during their runs. They're also considered one of the best-eating freshwater fish, especially the roe (eggs).
Silvery, deep-bodied fish. Greenish-blue back with a dark spot behind the gill cover, followed by several smaller spots. Large, easily-shed scales. Forked tail. Small mouth. Distinct keel (saw-toothed in front of the anal fin). Looks like a large, very deep herring.
American shad are anadromous — they live in the Atlantic Ocean and run up Maritime rivers in spring to spawn. They prefer moderate current and spawn in flowing water over gravel/sand. They school heavily during runs and provide non-stop action.

Matching your bait to the conditions is one of the biggest factors in catching American Shad. Here's what works when:
| Weather / Condition | Best Bait & Lures | Technique |
|---|---|---|
| 🌸 Spring spawning run | Shad darts (1/32–1/8 oz), small spoons (phoebe, kastmaster), small flies (shad fly) | Cast darts and spoons across current and retrieve slowly through runs. Shad school densely during runs. |
| 🪰 Fly fishing | Small bright flies (red, orange, white), bead-head shad flies | Shad take small flies readily during the run. Swing or dead-drift through runs. |
| ☁️ Overcast / Choppy | Brighter colored darts and spoons (chartreuse, pink, orange) | Shad respond to bright colors in low light — fish brighter patterns. |
| 🌊 High water | Heavier darts (1/4 oz) to reach bottom in stronger current | High water from spring runoff requires heavier jigs to get down. |
| 🌙 Evening | Small spoons, small darts fished through runs | Evening is prime shad time — fish are more active as light fades. |
Shad fishing is exclusively a spring activity. Runs begin in May (earlier in NS) and peak in June. The run lasts 3–6 weeks depending on the river. Timing varies with water temperature — runs start when water hits ~10–15°C.
