Mooneye are a silvery, laterally compressed fish closely related to goldeye. They're less commonly targeted by anglers but are willing biters and fun on light tackle — especially in prairie rivers. They look similar to goldeye but have a more silvery (less golden) eye.
Deep, laterally compressed, silvery body. Large eye (silvery, not golden like goldeye). Small mouth. Dorsal fin set far back, over the anal fin. Forked tail. Keel along the belly. Very similar in appearance to goldeye but with a more slender body and less golden eye.
Mooneye prefer large rivers and lakes with moderate current. They're found in the Saskatchewan River system and Lake Winnipeg watershed. They school in current seams, eddies, and near the surface — often seen dimpling like trout.
Mooneye can be found across these provinces and territories:

Matching your bait to the conditions is one of the biggest factors in catching Mooneye. Here's what works when:
| Weather / Condition | Best Bait & Lures | Technique |
|---|---|---|
| 🌤️ Calm / Evening | Small dry flies, small spinners, small spoons | Mooneye rise to surface insects. Cast small dry flies to dimpling fish. |
| ☁️ Overcast | Small spinners (Mepps #0-1), small jigs | Active feeding — work current seams and eddies with small hardware. |
| 🌬️ Windy | Small spinners, small crankbaits | Mooneye feed actively in wind — fish windblown current seams. |
| 🪰 Fly fishing | Small dry flies (Adams, caddis), small streamers | Mooneye take dry flies readily — fun on a light fly rod. |
| 🌙 Evening | Small dry flies, small poppers | Evening surface action is prime — mooneye dimple and rise like small trout. |
Mooneye are most active in summer (June–August) in warm river water. Spring fishing can be decent as water rises.
