Channel catfish are Canada's premier catfish — strong-fighting bottom feeders that grow huge in prairie rivers and lakes. The Red River in Manitoba is world-famous for trophy channel cats over 30 inches. They're nocturnal feeders with an incredible sense of smell.
Scaleless body, grey-silver to olive-bronze with dark spots (especially in younger fish). Forked tail. Barbels (whiskers) around the mouth — four under the jaw and two on top. Small eyes. Smooth, slimy skin. The anal fin is rounded with 24–30 rays.
Channel cats prefer warm water (22–28°C / 72–82°F) in large rivers, reservoirs, and lakes with mud or sand bottoms. They're bottom-dwelling scavengers that follow food smells. In rivers they hold in deep holes, below dams, in log jams, and along current seams. They're most active at night.

Matching your bait to the conditions is one of the biggest factors in catching Channel Catfish. Here's what works when:
| Weather / Condition | Best Bait & Lures | Technique |
|---|---|---|
| 🌙 Night | Cut bait (sucker, goldeye), chicken livers, shrimp, nightcrawlers | Peak catfish time. Fish on the bottom in current seams, deep holes, and below dams. |
| ☁️ Overcast / Murky water | Fresh cut bait with strong scent — bloody pieces are best | Catfish hunt by smell — scent spreads better in coloured water. Fish eddies and current breaks. |
| ☀️ Sunny / Warm | Nightcrawlers, leeches, prepared dough baits (stink bait) | Still catchable midday in deep holes and shaded structure. Bait placement on the bottom is critical. |
| 🌧️ Rising water / After rain | Large cut bait, live suckers, big gob of nightcrawlers | Rising water triggers feeding — catfish move into newly flooded areas to forage. Fish the current edges. |
| 🍂 Fall cooling water | Cut bait (larger pieces), big live minnows | Catfish feed heavily before winter. Fish deep holes in rivers where they congregate. |
Spring (post-spawn June): trophy season on the Red River — big fish are active and accessible. Summer (July–August): night fishing is most productive; fish deep holes by day. Fall (September–October): fish concentrate in deep river holes before winter — excellent action.
