How to identify Channel Catfish

Scaleless body, grey-silver to olive-bronze with dark spots (especially in younger fish). Forked tail. Barbels (whiskers) around the mouth — four under the jaw and two on top. Small eyes. Smooth, slimy skin. The anal fin is rounded with 24–30 rays.

Habitat & preferred water

Channel cats prefer warm water (22–28°C / 72–82°F) in large rivers, reservoirs, and lakes with mud or sand bottoms. They're bottom-dwelling scavengers that follow food smells. In rivers they hold in deep holes, below dams, in log jams, and along current seams. They're most active at night.
