Smallmouth bass are pound-for-pound the hardest-fighting fish in Canadian freshwater. They jump, they run, they headshake — and they're aggressive eaters that will smash a variety of baits. Found in clear, rocky lakes and rivers across the country, 'smallies' are a favourite of sport anglers.
Brown to bronze body, sometimes with a greenish tint. Vertical dark bars on the sides (not a horizontal stripe). Reddish or brown eyes. Upper jaw does not extend past the back of the eye (unlike largemouth). Three spines in the anal fin. The dorsal fin has a shallow notch between the spiny and soft portions.
Smallmouth prefer clear, cool water (18–24°C / 64–75°F) in lakes and rivers with rocky bottoms, shoals, points, and current. They're structure-oriented and love rock — boulders, ledges, rock piles, and rocky shorelines are prime. In rivers they hold in eddies, below riffles, and around current breaks.

Matching your bait to the conditions is one of the biggest factors in catching Smallmouth Bass. Here's what works when:
| Weather / Condition | Best Bait & Lures | Technique |
|---|---|---|
| ☀️ Sunny / Calm | Ned rig, tube jigs, drop shot with small soft plastics (green pumpkin) | Finesse is key in clear, bright conditions — small baits fished slowly on the bottom near rock structure. |
| ☁️ Overcast / Choppy | Crankbaits (craw patterns), spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, topwater poppers | Smallmouth get aggressive in low light — cover water with moving baits along points and flats. |
| 🌬️ Windy | Spinnerbaits, crankbaits, tube jigs on windblown points | Wind is your friend — it pushes baitfish onto windblown rock piles and points where smallies wait. |
| 🌧️ Pre-frontal | Swimbaits, jerkbaits ( jerkbait minnows), topwater walking baits | Active feeding before a front — fish aggressively with reaction baits. |
| 🥶 Cold water (spring/fall) | Tube jigs, hair jigs, blade baits, silver buddy | Cold smallmouth stick tight to deep rock — slow, vertical presentations work best. |
Spring (June opener): smallmouth move shallow to spawn on rocky flats — sight fishing for bedding fish. Summer (July–August): active throughout — fish weed edges, rock piles, and points all day. Fall (September–October): big schools feed heavily on baitfish — some of the best action of the year.
