How to identify Lake Sturgeon

Shark-like body with rows of bony plates (scutes) along the back and sides. Long, pointed snout. Four barbels (whiskers) hanging in front of a ventral, protrusible mouth (on the underside of the head). Heterocercal tail (upper lobe longer). Grey-brown back, pale belly. No scales — skin is leathery.

Habitat & preferred water

Lake sturgeon prefer large, deep lakes and big river systems with clean hard bottoms. They're bottom-dwelling, feeding on insect larvae, crayfish, and small fish. They require cold to cool water and spawn in fast-flowing rivers over clean gravel/cobble. Found in the Great Lakes, Lake Winnipeg, Saskatchewan River system, and St. Lawrence.
