Lake sturgeon are prehistoric giants — living dinosaurs that have roamed Canadian waters for over 100 million years. They're threatened across most of their range, strictly catch-and-release, and can live over 100 years and grow to 200+ pounds. Hooking one is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Shark-like body with rows of bony plates (scutes) along the back and sides. Long, pointed snout. Four barbels (whiskers) hanging in front of a ventral, protrusible mouth (on the underside of the head). Heterocercal tail (upper lobe longer). Grey-brown back, pale belly. No scales — skin is leathery.
Lake sturgeon prefer large, deep lakes and big river systems with clean hard bottoms. They're bottom-dwelling, feeding on insect larvae, crayfish, and small fish. They require cold to cool water and spawn in fast-flowing rivers over clean gravel/cobble. Found in the Great Lakes, Lake Winnipeg, Saskatchewan River system, and St. Lawrence.

Matching your bait to the conditions is one of the biggest factors in catching Lake Sturgeon. Here's what works when:
| Weather / Condition | Best Bait & Lures | Technique |
|---|---|---|
| 🌊 River (spring spawning run) | Nightcrawlers (large gob), cut bait (sucker, goldeye), dead smelt | Fish on the bottom in deep river holes near spawning areas. Heavy weight to hold in current. |
| ☀️ Summer (lake) | Large nightcrawler gob on a slip rig, cut bait on the bottom | Find deep holes and channels on your electronics. Fish baits on the bottom — sturgeon are pure bottom feeders. |
| ☁️ Overcast | Cut bait with strong scent — fresh bloody pieces | Sturgeon hunt by smell. Scent spreads better in low-light conditions. |
| 🌧️ Rising water | Large cut bait, nightcrawlers | Rising water triggers sturgeon movement — they follow flooded shorelines feeding on dislodged food. |
| 🥶 Cold water (spring/fall) | Cut bait fished very slowly on the bottom | Sturgeon are sluggish in cold water. Long soaks with scent-heavy baits are most effective. |
Lake sturgeon fishing is heavily regulated. Seasons are short and vary by province/zone. Many areas are closed entirely. Where open, spring (post-spawn) and early summer are best. Check regulations carefully before targeting sturgeon.
