Brown trout are the wariest, most selective trout in Canadian waters — and the most rewarding to catch. They grow large, they're finicky eaters, and they're most active in low light. A big brown trout is a trophy that few anglers ever achieve.
Golden-brown to olive body with black spots and red/orange spots scattered on the sides (the mix of black and red spots distinguishes browns from brook or rainbow trout). Square tail. Large mouth extending past the eye in big fish. The belly is yellowish. Sea-run browns are more silvery.
Browns tolerate slightly warmer water (8–20°C / 46–68°F) than other trout and are found in larger streams, rivers, and lakes. They prefer undercut banks, deep pools, log jams, and overhanging cover. They're highly territorial and solitary — each big brown has its own lie that it defends.

Matching your bait to the conditions is one of the biggest factors in catching Brown Trout. Here's what works when:
| Weather / Condition | Best Bait & Lures | Technique |
|---|---|---|
| 🌙 Low light / Evening / Night | Large streamers (sculpin patterns, zonkers, big woolly buggers) | Browns are nocturnal feeders. Big fish come out after dark — strip large streamers through deep lies. |
| ☁️ Overcast | Nymphs (pheasant tail, hare's ear), small streamers, dry flies during hatches | Overcast days are when browns feed confidently — dry fly and nymph fishing both productive. |
| 🌧️ After rain / High water | San Juan worms, large stonefly nymphs, big streamers | Browns move from cover to feed when water is coloured — fish the edges of the current. |
| ☀️ Sunny / Clear | Tiny midge patterns, small nymphs under an indicator (stealth) | Browns are extremely wary in bright conditions — long leaders, light tippet, delicate presentations. |
| 🍂 Fall (pre-spawn) | Egg patterns, large streamers (to imitate baitfish or other trout) | Big browns get territorial before the spawn — this is your best shot at a trophy. |
Spring (May–June): post-spawn recovery, fish are hungry but wary. Summer (July–August): early morning, late evening, and night fishing only — browns hide during the day. Fall (September–October): spawning season — trophy browns are caught on large streamers.
