Rainbow trout are one of Canada's most widespread and adaptable trout — found in lakes, rivers, and streams across the country, and the source of steelhead (the sea-run version). They're aggressive, acrobatic fighters that take both flies and hardware readily.
Silvery body with a distinctive pink to red horizontal stripe down each side. Black spots covering the back, dorsal fin, and tail (the spotting on the tail is a key ID). Square tail (unlike the forked tail of salmon). Small mouth. Sea-run 'steelhead' are much more silvery with a bolder lateral stripe.
Rainbow trout tolerate a wider temperature range than most trout (8–18°C / 46–64°F). They're found in cold and cool streams, rivers, and lakes. Lake-dwelling rainbows roam open water and move into tributaries to spawn. Stream rainbows hold in riffles, runs, and pools, preferring faster water than brook trout.

Matching your bait to the conditions is one of the biggest factors in catching Rainbow Trout. Here's what works when:
| Weather / Condition | Best Bait & Lures | Technique |
|---|---|---|
| 🌤️ Calm / Rising fish | Dry flies (elk hair caddis, blue winged olive, Adams) sizes 14–18 | Match the hatch. Rainbows are selective dry-fly feeders — observe what's hatching and imitate it. |
| ☁️ Overcast | Streamers (woolly bugger, muddler), nymphs under an indicator | Rainbows get aggressive in low light — swing and strip streamers through runs and pools. |
| 🌬️ Windy / Choppy | Spinners (Mepps, Blue Fox), small spoons (Little Cleo) | Hardware shines in wind — spinners and spoons cast far and trigger reaction strikes. |
| 🌊 Lake fishing | Trolling spoons (Williams, Apex), cowbells with a wedding ring + worm | In lakes, troll along drop-offs and over submerged structure. Depth matters — use lead core or downriggers. |
| 🥶 Cold water (spring/fall) | Egg patterns, stonefly nymphs, small streamers fished slowly | Cold rainbows prefer a slow presentation near the bottom. |
Spring (April–May): rainbows move into tributaries to spawn — steelhead runs are legendary. Summer (June–August): stream fishing peaks; lake fish go deep. Fall (September–October): steelhead begin their fall runs in Great Lakes tributaries; stream rainbows feed heavily.
