White bass are an aggressive, schooling fish that provides fast action when you find them. They're known for their spring spawning runs up rivers, where thousands of fish can be caught in a single outing. A great light-tackle species.
Silvery-white body with faint, broken horizontal stripes (less distinct than striped bass). Two separate dorsal fins. Deep body. Small patch of teeth on the base of the tongue. Yellowish or white eyes. Smaller and more compressed than striped bass.
White bass prefer warm water (18–24°C) in large lakes and reservoirs. They school in open water, chasing baitfish (shad, emerald shiners) near the surface. In spring, they run up tributary rivers to spawn. They're most active in low light and wind.
White Bass can be found across these provinces and territories:

Matching your bait to the conditions is one of the biggest factors in catching White Bass. Here's what works when:
| Weather / Condition | Best Bait & Lures | Technique |
|---|---|---|
| 🌸 Spring spawning run | Small jigs (1/8 oz) with white twister tails, small spinners (Mepps #2), small spoons | White bass run up rivers in spring. Cast small white/silver baits across current — non-stop action. |
| 🌊 Open water (schooling) | Small crankbaits (shad patterns), small spoons, white jigs | Find surface feeding frenzies (birds diving, fish breaking). Cast into the school — every cast gets a hit. |
| ☁️ Overcast / Windy | Small spinnerbaits, small crankbaits, topwater poppers | White bass feed aggressively on the surface in low light and wind — topwater can be non-stop. |
| ☀️ Sunny / Calm | Small jigs fished deep, live minnows under a bobber | They go deeper in bright conditions — fish 15–25 ft with small jigs and live bait. |
| 🌙 Evening | Topwater poppers, small spinners, small crankbaits | Evening surface action is prime — white bass push baitfish to the top as light fades. |
Spring (May–June): spawning runs up rivers — peak action. Summer (July–August): schooling in open water — look for surface feeds. Fall (September–October): schools disperse, fishing tapers.
